Bayanivation wins prestigious US Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund

Nov 3, 2019 | News and Updates

MANILA, Philippines – Bayanivation, Limitless Lab’s flagship initiative on local governance innovation, is the only Filipino initiative that received the distinguished US Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund (AEIF) this 2019.

AEIF supports US Exchange alumni initiatives that “promote shared values and innovative solutions to global challenges.”

Among more than 1,400 project submissions from 150 countries, 64 teams received the grant. Bayanivation is one of the 13 winners who will focus on building civic participation, good governance, and resilient communities. Other winners fall under the theme of Science, Technology and Health, Women, Economy, and Education.

Limitless Lab CEO Joie Cruz joined the competition along with her teammates iDEYA Center Manager Dave Del Rosario and Night Owl Hackerspace Founder Carl Simpao. All three team members are alumni of the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Academic Fellowship on Social Entrepreneurship and Economic Development.

According to Cruz, she conceptualized and worked on the project last 2018 during her fellowship at the University of Connecticut.

“My YSEALI fellowship really helped me to grow and test the idea further. While in the US, I also had the chance to benchmark and learn from inspiring mentors who gave me extremely valuable insights – one of them was even the former chief operating officer of Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign. After more than a year of experimenting and bootstrapping for the project, we’re very happy and grateful to be given a chance to implement it on a bigger scale.” said Cruz.

Bayanivation aims to spark local government innovation in the Philippines using the design thinking framework. This initiative will foster human-centered public policy design, participatory governance, and data-driven decision making across cities and municipalities.

The project will be piloted in three locations in 2020 – Pasig City (Luzon), Sipalay City (Visayas), and Del Carmen, Siargao (Mindanao).
